Camp Ramsbottom celebrates 50 years

PAWTUCKET – Camp Ramsbottom, in Rehoboth, Mass., celebrated its 50th year as an outdoor escape for children enrolled in the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket on July 24.

James Hoyt, Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket’s CEO, said the best way to describe what the camp means to current and former campers, counselors and their families is “memories.”

He added: “Whether a nature hike through the woods, campfire cooking, a hot day’s swim or a kayak ride, every camper carries his or her nostalgic, childhood moments that will remind them of time enjoyed at Camp Ramsbottom.”

The celebration included a cookout, tours of the camp, swimming, mini-golf and a petting zoo.

Accredited by the American Camp Association, a national authority in child development, over the past half century Camp Ramsbottom has hosted close to 20,000 campers and counselors. The camp was founded when Pawtucket industrialist George R. Ramsbottom donated the land to what was then known as the Pawtucket Boy’s Club.
