WARWICK – Cape Air will no longer offer seasonal summer service from T.F. Green to Block Island, the airline announced this week.
Trish Lorino, vice president of marketing and public relations for Hyannis, Mass.-based Cape Air, said Wednesday that the decision was made due to the “pilot shortage affecting all the airlines in the nation.”
Lorino said last summer marked the second that the airline offered flights to the island. The news also means that the airline is leaving T.F. Green, and will no longer offer flights to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, she said. Service to the Massachusetts islands had been offered from Green for 18 years.
Patti Goldstein, T.F. Green spokeswoman, said the news came out Tuesday, and although they were surprised, it was not entirely unexpected due to the nationwide pilot shortage.
Lorino said it remains the airline’s goal to return to Green eventually.
Cape Air, according to the Block Island Times, began the Block Island route in 2014 after receiving a $900,000 grant requested by the R.I. Airport Corp. from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Block Island will continue to be served by New England Airlines, which offers flights to the island from Westerly; it has been offering daily flights there since 1970, according to its website.

  1. High speed ferries, whether to Block Island, Martha’s Vineyard or many other like destinations around the US have dug into this type of airline operation in recent years. I wouldn’t take it to mean anything about T. F. Green, per se.
