Care N.E., Memorial move closer toward partnership

Posted 1/7/13

PROVIDENCE – Care New England and Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island have reached a definitive agreement to establish Memorial as a hospital partner within the Care New England network, both organizations announced on Jan. 2.

The affiliation agreement was unanimously approved by the boards of both organizations, according to hospital officials at both institutions.

The organizations will begin submitting the details of the affiliation agreement for both federal and state regulatory approvals in the coming month.

Among the underlying principles embraced as part the agreement were:

  • Improvement of quality of clinical programs and services.

  • Programmatic development of signature service lines, including women’s health, behavioral health, primary care, and home health.

  • Maintenance of the strong academic and research platform that is essential to fostering clinical excellence and innovation.

  • Improvement of facilities, technology and information technology platforms.

  • Development of an integrated delivery system in which patient care is coordinated across the full continuum of care for population health management.

  • Responsible stewardship of charitable assets

“As we work to transform the future of health care for the community,” said Dennis D. Keefe, president and CEO of Care New England, “the addition of Memorial Hospital to Care New England brings us a needed dimension of care and coverage that will serve the community well.”

“We are very pleased to enter into this affiliation agreement with Care New England,” said Arthur DeBlois III, interim president and CEO at Memorial Hospital. “Not only does it provide a strong continuity of care for our patients, it also strengthens the capabilities of both systems, whether it be in the area of surgery, mental health, obstetrics, rehabilitation or primary care.”
