CareChex releases hospital quality ratings, local hospitals recognized

PROVIDENCE – Miriam Hospital took the top spot in a regional list for overall medical care by CareChex, a division of Quantros, which is an independent quality ratings organization.

Southcoast Health in New Bedford was second in the category.

CareChex released its medical excellence and patient safety awards this week.

Southcoast Health was in first place in Massachusetts and among the top 100 hospitals in the country for medical excellence in four categories, including overall medical care, heart attack treatment, pulmonary care and trauma care.

(In heart attack treatment, Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence was first on the regional list, while Southcoast slipped to fourth place.)

“CareChex allows the public to make informed decisions regarding the quality of medical care provided by health systems,” Dr. Thane Forthman, Quantros chief analytics officer, said in the Southcoast Health statement released this week. “We are pleased to acknowledge Southcoast Health has achieved an exceptionally high level of performance for medical excellence and patient safety in a number of clinical categories. Southcoast Health’s performance is a benchmark other health systems should seek to emulate.”

Southcoast Health said it is ranked in the top 100 in the country for medical excellence in these categories: overall medical care, coronary bypass surgery, heart attack and heart failure treatments, major neurosurgery, pulmonary care and trauma care. It is in the top 10 percent in the country for medical excellence in these areas: overall medical care, coronary bypass surgery, gastrointestinal care, general surgery, heart attack and heart failure treatments, hip fracture repair, neurological care, major neurosurgery, pulmonary care, stroke care and trauma care.

Southcoast Health ranked first in Massachusetts and in the top 100 in the country for patient safety in the areas of cancer care, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, heart attack and heart failure treatments and hip fracture repair.

Rhode Island hospitals achieving CareChex recognition for medical excellence in cancer care are The Miriam Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital and Women & Infants Hospital in Providence; Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence; Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket; and South County Hospital in Wakefield; and in nearby Massachusetts, Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital and Good Samaritan Medical Center, both in Brockton, were duly recognized.

Other area hospitals earning CareChex recognition for medical excellence in overall hospital care are The Miriam Hospital and South County Hospital; those recognized for medical excellence in overall medical care are The Miriam Hospital, Landmark Medical Center and, in Fall River, Saint Anne’s Hospital. The only Rhode Island hospital receiving recognition for medical excellence in overall surgical care is The Miriam Hospital, a Lifespan hospital.
