EXETER – Wi-Fi just got a little better at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, with some help from Carousel Industries of North America Inc. and Extreme Networks Inc.
San Jose, Calif.-based Extreme Networks, which is the official Wi-Fi solutions provider of the National Football League, said in a news release issued Monday that it has extended its partnership with the New England Patriots to deploy its 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless technology at Gillette, a move that will both improve the fan experience and give the Patriots better analytics to measure network usage.
Carousel, which specializes in communications and network technologies, professional and managed services, and cloud solutions, helped to design and implement the network and will provide ongoing technical support to the technical teams for the Patriots and at Gillette Stadium, according to a Carousel spokesman.
Gillette has had the ExtremeWireless technology at the stadium since 2012. Since then, Wi-Fi use has grown by more than 100 percent, the release said. And thanks to the latest upgrade, the Patriots has increased its internet capacity to 10G.
According to the release, the new access point hardware enables more reliable access to on-demand and streaming videos, such as instant replays, unique camera angles and other video-based content.
“Carousel is excited to be part of the growing trend of bringing the most sophisticated technologies from the locations where they are traditionally found – our offices and places of work – to a stadium, where the experience of enjoying a sporting or live event with friends or family is completely enhanced. Fans at Gillette can now connect with each other, the team, purchase gear or check fantasy football scores with the same connectivity or better than they would have at home,” James Marsh, chief revenue officer, Carousel Industries, said in a statement.
Fred Kirsch, vice president of content, New England Patriots and Kraft Sports Productions, said the team recognizes that “in-stadium, high-density Wi-Fi connectivity is the next frontier for the NFL.”
John Brams, director of sports, entertainment and hospitality, Extreme Networks, said Gillette is the first stadium to receive the Wave 2 implementation this year.
“With more devices on the network and a higher demand for engagement at Gillette Stadium, we understand that advanced Wi-Fi technology is necessary to connect fans with their favorite apps and deliver an exceptional game day experience,” Brams said.
This is the latest partnership between Carousel and Extreme.
Carousel also worked with Extreme to upgrade technology at First Niagara Center in New York, home of the Buffalo Sabres, and also worked with Extreme last year to improve Wi-Fi at New Era Field in Buffalo, N.Y., home of the Buffalo Bills.
