PROVIDENCE – Carpionato Group wants to turn the former Providence Fruit & Produce Warehouse property on Harris Avenue into a surface parking lot, according to an application with city officials.
The 174,575-square-foot lot, now empty, would have spaces for 737 cars.
Providence Director of Current Planning Bob Azar said Carpionato had indicated the parking lot would be temporary, but did not mention any other plans for the property or any nearby.
He said the parking lot could be made without any zoning relief.
Attempts to reach Carpionato for comment were unsuccessful.
Carpionato tore down the then 79-year-old Fruit & Produce Warehouse in 2008 over the objections of preservationists.
The developer announced plans to turn the property into a shopping center, but never acted on them, and the land has been fallow for five years.
Last month, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras made reducing the number of surface parking lots in the city, and preventing new ones from being created, a priority.
The City Plan Commission is reviewing Carpionato’s master plan for the parking lot Tuesday, April 23.
