TIVERTON – Carpionato Group has made an introductory pitch to the Tiverton Town Council and Planning Board for a large-scale, mixed-use development that could be as large as 62 acres, The Herald News of Fall River reported.
The Johnston-based developer is calling the project Tiverton Crossings. According to the Herald, the project would be made up of about 18 buildings, including a 10,000-sqaure-foot conference center, a 100-room, three- to four-story hotel and two 45,000-square-foot retail buildings.
The newspaper said on its website that a joint meeting of the Town Council and Planning Board in April was “well attended.” The two boards are scheduling a walk-through of the development’s proposed site.
Carpionato told town officials that Tiverton Crossings – which would include retail, office and residential space – would bring new jobs and an expanded commercial tax base to the town. At the meeting, officials questioned the project’s impact on traffic and local business. Additionally, Planning Board members questioned whether Tiverton Crossings is compatible with the town’s comprehensive plan, which does not currently allow for mixed-use development, the paper said.
According to the paper, Joe Pierik, a Carpionato vice president, said the project would “probably take the better part of a decade to come to full fruition.”
He said the developer is looking for retailers like Whole Foods, Anthropologie, REI and Alex & Ani – “no Walmart, no K-mart.”
The project would include luxury apartments, in the $2,000 to $2,500 monthly rent range, the company said. •
