Chafee, DLT announce apprenticeship program

PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and R.I. Department of Labor and Training Director Charles J. Fogarty last week announced the approval of the state’s fourth nontraditional apprenticeship program, this one targeting the construction industry.
The program, established by Gilbane Building Co. in conjunction with Building Futures, is expected to train one or two job-ready professionals in the construction industry within its first year.
In 2013, Chafee advocated for including $150,000 in the state’s fiscal 2014 budget to develop core elements of nontraditional apprenticeship programs. These components include classroom instruction using the highest industry standards and “earn-while-you-learn” on-the-job training. The program announced last week is the second to grow out of that funding.
Chafee’s administration has also worked to establish nontraditional apprenticeships in information technology, the marine trades and computer numerically controlled machining. •
