PROVIDENCE – Zero people support Lincoln D. Chafee for president, according to a new poll released by Monmouth University this week.
The poll was conducted by telephone from July 9 to 12 with 1,001 adults across the United States, and the results were based on a voter sample of 357 registered voters who identify themselves as Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party.
The margin of error was 5.2 percent.
Chafee, who left the governor’s office last year, is seeking the Democratic nomination for president. He was elected governor as an independent, and switched to the Democratic party in 2013. He also served as a Republican U.S. senator.
In an interview with Providence Business News last month, Chafee said he thinks Rhode Islanders will become more excited about his presidency as the race continues.
In reponse to the poll, his spokeswoman, Debbie Rich, wrote in an email, “It appears Chafee, O’Malley and Webb have a bit of a hill to climb.”
The poll showed that Hillary Clinton has a sizeable lead over the Democratic field, but Vice President Joe Biden could take some of her support if he chooses to run. Thirteen percent of those polled said they would vote for Biden.
Clinton has the support of 51 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters nationwide, down from 57 percent in June and 60 percent in April.

Bernie Sanders is second at 17 percent, but his support has steadily grown from 12 percent in June and 7 percent in April. Both Martin O’Malley and Jim Webb had 1 percent support. Another 15 percent were undecided.

“Chafee registers no support in the poll,” according to the news release from Monmouth.

This is the second month in a row that Chafee has had no support, as he also registered zero in June, according to Monmouth.

Those polled were asked if they had a favorable or unfavorable view of the candidates. Nine percent had a favorable view of Chafee, while 13 percent had an unfavorable view and 78 percent had no opinion. That compares with 74 percent of those polled having a favorable opinion of Clinton, 17 percent having an unfavorable opinion of her and 9 percent having no opinion.
