PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, the country’s only Independent governor, is slated to speak at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Chafee, a former Republican, will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 4 during the convention’s opening night and is expected to discuss why he and other non-Democrats are supporting President Barack Obama.

“I am honored to be attending the 2012 Democratic National Convention,” Chafee said in prepared remarks. “President Obama has been a friend to Rhode Island, his policies have brought valuable benefits to the people of our state during historically difficult times, and I am proud to explain to the convention audience why I – a former Republican – and lots of people like me are supporting the President’s re-election.”

Chafee previously served as national co-chair of Republicans and Independents for Obama during the 2008 election and is currently a national co-chair of Obama’s re-election campaign.

The governor is slated to speak between 8:30 and 9 p.m., shortly before First Lady Michelle Obama.

Brilliant pick on the DNC's part. Rhode Island has 11+ percent unemployment, the boondoggle Wickford train station build with multi-millions in stimulus is getting, what, 10 riders per day and running $600,000+ in the red on the backs of the few of us in RI who still have jobs and pay income and property taxes. RNC, take note for advertising purposes! Friday, August 31, 2012|Report this
