TIVERTON – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee joined officials from the R.I. Department of Transportation and members of the media for a tour of the new Sakonnet River Bridge on Monday.

RIDOT opened northbound traffic on Route 24 onto the new bridge Thursday, Sept. 20. In roughly one week, southbound traffic on Route 24 also will shift to the new bridge.

As more segments of the bridge open, the 18-ton weight limit will be lifted, according to a RIDOT release. The bridge and ramps are set for completion in 2013.

Construction crews broke ground on the $163.7 million bridge project, which carries Route 24 between Tiverton and Portsmouth, in April 2009.
