PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee is meeting with U.S. troops in Kuwait and Afghanistan this week as part of a five-day trip with the governors of Michigan and South Dakota.

Chafee left from Washington D.C. on Monday and will visit Rhode Island soldiers in the field and at U.S. medical facilities in Afghanistan.

The governor is scheduled to return to the country on Friday and then be back at the State House next Monday, spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger said.

“Rhode Island has one of the highest deployment rates of any state in the nation,” Chafee said in a news release.

“This visit gives me a chance to review operations on the ground first-hand and to spend time with and offer my support to troops currently serving overseas,” he added. “I traveled to Afghanistan as a U.S. Senator in 2003, and I am grateful for the opportunity to return and visit with our troops.”

Chafee made the trip with South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.
