EAST GREENWICH – The Odeum Corp. this month received $620,000 in grant support, which will go toward long-awaited improvements to the venue’s historic façade.

The nonprofit owner of The Greenwich Odeum, a performing arts venue in East Greenwich, received three grants last week, including one for $343,795 from The Champlin Foundations. The capital gains grant augments a $250,000 grant Odeum received from the R.I. State Council on the Arts and a $28,896 grant from the R.I. Historical Preservation Commission, which were a part of $4.2 million in state money given to 45 arts, culture, heritage and public historic sites across the state on Jan. 11.

“We are overwhelmed by this latest show of support,” said Odeum president Kevin Muoio.

The Champlain Foundations, founded in 1932, has awarded nearly $535 million in direct grants in support of 900 nonprofits. The grant money for the performing arts center, originally built in 1926, also will help the nonprofit upgrade its facilities to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Odeum will add handicapped accessible restrooms and an assistive listening system.

“We stand at a crucial turning point in the life of The Odeum and these improvements will further solidify the venue as a beloved community treasure and a flourishing cultural center for the arts,” Muoio said.
