CHARLESTOWN – The vintage seaside motel is not a thing of the past in Rhode Island real estate.
Surfside Motel, established in 1938, is on the market this summer after being held for 12 years by its current owner.
It’s not a tear-down to make way for something new. The property is expected to be sold to another motel-owner-manager or an investor, according to the listing agent, Michael Kern of Peter M. Scotti & Associates. If so, it will join several other properties that have sold in the past year.
The motel features a detached, owner or manager’s suite and 15 guest units. It is listed at $885,000, and located in the Cross Mills section of Charlestown, close to the beach.
The site is zoned commercial, covers 1.03 acres and can be operated seasonally or year-round, according to Kern.
The current owner purchased the site in 2004 for $675,000, according to an online property database, and according to Kern, has made extensive renovations to the property.
Over the last year, at least three other seaside motels sold along the Rhode Island coast.
In September 2015, the Travel Tel Motel, an eight-unit motel on Post Road in Westerly, with an office and owner’s unit, sold for $343,000 after 49 days on the market, according to information provided by Multiple Listing Service.
In June 2015, the Newland Motel, an eight-unit motel in Misquamicut, on Winnapaug Road, sold for $785,000 after 10 days on market.
In May 2015, the Ocean Aire Motel on Old Post Road in Charlestown, with eight rooms and three efficiency units, two cottages and a house with office, sold for $520,000 after 189 days on the market.
