Chronicle: Brown professors paid most in R.I., gender gap persists

THE CHRONICLE OF Higher Education said that in 2013, Brown University professors made the most in the Ocean State, while New England Institute of Technology professors made the least.

PROVIDENCE – Professors at Brown University make the most in Rhode Island, while those at the New England Institute of Technology make the least, according to a 2013 salary study by the Chronicle of Higher Education. But on average, male professors made 19.4 percent more in compensation than their female Ocean State colleagues.
Brown University full professors make an average of $161,235, while NEIT professors make $66,582.
Bryant University trails Brown with an average professor salary of $148,239.
Bryant’s associate professors and assistant professors make more than those at Brown, however, at $115,929 and $108,657, compared with Brown’s $105,138 and $86,265, respectively.
Pay for other colleges and universities are as follows:

  • Roger Williams University: professors, $115,938; associate professors, $94,626; assistant professors, $69,777
  • Providence College: professors, $109,323; associate professors, $85,968; assistant professors, $73,881
  • University of Rhode Island: professors, $103,554; associate professors, $76,230; assistant professors, $67,914
  • Johnson & Wales University: professors, $94,824; associate professors, $76,455; assistant professors, $66,168
  • Salve Regina University: professors, $86,859; associate professors, $65,682; assistant professors, $56,583
  • Rhode Island School of Design: professors, $85,617; associate professors, $61,938; assistant professors, $49,617
  • Roger Williams University School of Law: professors, $78,228; associate professors, $66,627; assistant professors, $66,888
  • Rhode Island College: professors, $77,949; associate professors, $66,654; assistant professors, $57,816
  • Community College of Rhode Island: professors, $74,304; associate professors, $55,809; assistant professors, $49,437
  • New England Institute of Technology: professors, $66,582; associate professors, $60,417; assistant professors, $51,696

On average, professors in Rhode Island made $115,044 in 2013, a 32 percent increase since 2003 when the average salary was $87,231.
Male professors had an average salary of $122,096 in 2013, while female professors had an average salary of $102,223 that year. Male associate professors had an average salary of $83,868, while female associate professors averaged $75,867.
Chronicle based its findings on 12 colleges and universities, with an average enrollment of approximately 7,000 and 111 faculty members.
