Cities awarded $2.2M in federal housing aid

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $2.2 million for affordable-housing initiatives for families with low incomes and emergency shelters and services for the homeless in two Rhode Island communities.

Woonsocket and East Providence have been awarded $1,159,611 and $662,221 respectively from HUD’s Community Development Block Grant program, which aims to grow affordable housing, and retain and expand local businesses in urban communities. U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. David Cicilline announced the awards last week.

Woonsocket will receive $286,410 from HUD’s HOME Investment Partnerships program, which funds housing initiatives, often in partnership with nonprofit housing organizations.

Woonsocket will also receive $102,412 from the HUD Emergency Solutions Grants program to combat homelessness through improving the operations of homeless shelters and providing essential services. •
