PROVIDENCE – The U.S. Postal Service has announced that the main post office in Providence will be closed on Sundays beginning Aug. 16.
Hours are being reduced at the Corliss Street post office due to economic concerns and a drop in mail volume, according to a statement from the USPS. Post office officials said studies of traffic at the location showed a steady drop in recent years in the number of transactions on Sundays.
“To maintain our ability to affordably serve families and businesses, we’re making changes to our operations, staffing and facilities to match the drop in mail volume and increasing costs,” the Postal Service said in a news release.
The post office’s automated lobby will remain open 24 hours a day. The postal service also has 24-hour automated lobbies in Cranston, Johnston, East Greenwich and Wakefield.
