PROVIDENCE – Coastal Medical has won a national award for excellence in its use of electronic health records to improve the quality of car and patient safety.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMMS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a better understanding of health care information and management systems, has named Coastal Medical the winner of its 2012 Ambulatory Davies Award of Excellence. The award will be presented at the annual HIMMS conference in New Orleans, La., on March 3-7, 2013.
“Coastal has used the EMR technology platform to establish a strong foundation on which to deliver evidence-based, high quality care and produce measurable outcomes,” said Dr. John Bender, chair of the Davies Ambulatory Award Committee and medical director at Miramont Family Medicine, in Ft. Collins, Colo. “All of us congratulate Coastal Medical Inc. for its focus on improving the quality of health care delivery with the best use of health IT.”
Dr. Al Kurose, president and CEO of Coastal Medical, said his medical service organization was honored to receive the distinguished award. “Our use of the eClinicalWorks EMR has allowed us to measure the effectiveness of treatment for patients with chronic illnesses and to ensure that patients are made aware when they are due for preventive health measures such as immunizations and mammography,” he said. “Our electronic prescribing of medications is reducing medication errors and our patients can now access their test results and request appointments using our ‘patient portal’ through the Internet.”
