College Crusade raises $60K at Believe Breakfast

PROVIDENCE – The College Crusade of Rhode Island raised $60,000 at its 2015 Believe Breakfast celebration in mid-November at the Providence Marriott Downtown.
The College Crusade is a nonprofit organization funded by a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s GEAR UP program, the state of Rhode Island, and private corporations, foundations and individuals. The funds will support the organization’s mission.
The organization also honored community members James L. “Jamo” Carr Jr. and Chanravy Proeung for their contributions.
Carr, the president and CEO of H. Carr & Sons Inc., received the 2015 Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli Distinguished Service Award for making an “extraordinary contribution” to the field of college access and success.
Carr, a resident of Holliston, Mass., has led H. Carr & Sons, Inc., for the past 40 years. He is a longtime supporter of The College Crusade and a civic leader in Rhode Island.
Proeung, a College Crusade alumna and 2004 graduate of Classical High School, received the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes an alumnus or alumna of The College Crusade who has had exemplary college and early career success and who demonstrates a commitment to community.
Proeung, who lives in Cranston, graduated from Rhode Island College in 2009 with a B.S. in nursing. She is a national organizer for the Southeast Asian Freedom Network and a 2015 Soros Justice Fellow.
The College Crusade is a college-readiness and scholarship program that supports approximately 3,800 low-income urban students in middle school and high school each year. Since 2001, The College Crusade has awarded more than $33 million in college scholarships to more than 4,200 Rhode Island students.
