Committed to the cause from the top

If you are among the roughly 2,400 employees of Tufts Health Plan in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, you may, if you wish, sign up to meditate online.

But the people who manage the company’s WorkingWell employee health program say the person-to-person touch is the real miracle worker in getting people to improve their health.

“We set up a lot of programs with peers and teams, and that tends to keep people more engaged,” said Lydia Greene, vice president of human resources and diversity.

An example is an on-site exercise instructor who hands out an “Attaboy!” to a co-worker for a good workout as they pass in the cafeteria. Or the hugs and tears as runners finish the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women.

About one-third of the company belongs to the gym at Tufts’ Watertown, Mass., headquarters.

Employee suggestions have helped WorkingWell grow. But another important element? “Commitment from the top,” Greene said. n
