Committee created for UMass president search

DARTMOUTH – The search for a new president for the University of Massachusetts system launched Friday with the creation of a search committee by the board of trustees.
The trustees established a 21-member presidential search committee to oversee what it said would be a “wide-ranging and comprehensive search process.”
“We will ask this committee to conduct a national search that is open and thorough – a process that will give any and all candidates the opportunity to come forward and offer their ideas and make their case,” Board of Trustees Chairman Victor Woolridge said in prepared remarks. “This board is wholeheartedly committed to conducting a search that is inclusive and transparent, with the goal of attracting the outstanding candidates that a top-tier university like UMass deserves.”
Woolridge described the committee as “distinguished and diverse.” It includes faculty members from all five UMass campuses, three students, community and business leaders, and members of the UMass board of trustees, including Secretary of Education James A. Peyser.
Robert J. Manning, chairman of MFS Investment Management and former chairman of the UMass board of trustees, will chair the search committee.

The Search Committee will present its recommendations to the UMass board of trustees, which makes the final president selection. The board expects that to happen by July 1.

UMass President Robert L. Caret previously announced that he will assume the chancellorship of the University System of Maryland on July 1. Caret has served as president of the UMass system since July 2011, and will formally step down on June 30.
The search committee is expected to hold its first meeting in the coming weeks.

In addition to Manning, the other members are:
