The Beacon Mutual Insurance Co.’s wellness committee offers and supports events that encourage and foster good health for all Beacon employees. The 13-member panel is the powerhouse of a wellness initiative of the Warwick-based firm, which has more than 170 employees.
The company’s wellness committee is active and engaged, said Pam Alarie, vice president of human resources. “The senior management team is very supportive and proud of the work of this committee,” she said.
During the course of the year, the committee offers more than 20 low- to no-cost programs, each attended by at least 35 employees. The idea is to have a variety of topics delivered and presented in a variety of ways. These programs include basic fitness classes, financial health seminars, safe-driving instructions, informational hallway kiosks, periodic biometric screenings and classroom-education programs — all offered with the help of Beacon vendor partners.
The committee’s goal, said Alarie, is to keep its programming fresh and unique so as to continue to engage employees – and maybe attract new participants as well. The “Maintain, Don’t Gain” program is a company favorite, she said. With high participation, the program runs from just before Thanksgiving to just after New Year’s Day. The idea is to make it through the holiday season – with all its caloric cocktails, pumpkin pies, decadent cookies and mashed potatoes with gravy – without gaining more than 3 pounds (and preferably less), using wise food choices and a focus on exercise.
