Company warns of heightened e-filing threat

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Rhode Island taxpayers filing their taxes electronically reap benefits including a quick refund and instant confirmation their tax filing is on time – but there’s a major concern to be aware of with e-filing, cybercrime solutions provider ThreatNetrix said in a company press release.
The increased reliance on e-filing heightens the risk that personal and financial data is compromised by cybercriminals and used for identity fraud, tax refund theft and other cybercrimes, the company said. ThreatNetrix advises making sure the online filing site is secure, watch for suspicious e-mails and pop-ups and safeguard the password.
Rhode Island residents and businesses will transmit more than 431,400 individual tax filing documents electronically this year, according to ThreatNetrix.
In 2012, about 82 percent of Rhode Island taxpayers are expected to e-file. In 2011, 80 percent of Rhode Island taxpayers, filed electronically, according to ThreatNetrix.
