Compensation costs increase in New England over the year in June

PROVIDENCE – Compensation costs for private industry workers in New England increased 1.5 percent year over year in June, below the national rate of 1.9 percent, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.
In comparison, the Northeast, which includes New England and the Middle Atlantic states, saw compensation grow 2.1 percent during that time.
The employment cost index for wages and salaries, for private industry workers, in the Northeast grew 2.2 percent year over year in June, and 1.6 percent year over year in New England. The growth in the Northeast matched the national year over year hike of 2.2 percent.
Wages and salaries comprise about 70 percent of compensation costs, according to the federal agency.

The BLS said that nationally, compensation costs were basically unchanged from the previous year, when the increase was 2 percent.

Among occupational groups, the BLS said compensation cost increases for private industry workers for the 12-month period ending June 2015 ranged from 1.7 percent for natural resources, construction and maintenance occupations to 2.5 percent for production, transportation and material moving occupations.

And, among industry supersectors, compensation cost changes for private industry workers over the year ranged from -1.6 percent for information to 2.5 percent for manufacturing, the agency said.
