PAWTUCKET – A conference and trade show highlighting the importance of composting food scraps will take place Feb. 27 at Hope Artiste Village.

“With the landfill in Johnston filling up, and the problems with stench and sea gulls, a big part of the solution is to get all of the food scrap out of the dump. That we can solve a big problem and at the same time provide resources that help us build our agriculture and food security and create jobs seems a win for the entire state,” said Greg Gerritt of the Environment Council of Rhode Island.

The conference will start at 8:30 a.m. and feature 30 exhibitors ranging from commercial composting equipment dealers, commercial composters, haulers, businesses that sell equipment for separating food scrap in kitchens, and users of compost.

Speakers will include: Josh Nelson, manager of AgriLab Technologies in Vermont, specializing in heat capture and transfer of aerobic composting; Michael Virga, executive director the U.S. Composting Council; and Nancy Warner of The Worm Ladies of Charlestown Inc.

The event will take place in Room 715 of Hope Artiste Village, 999 Main St., Pawtucket; registration costs $25 at the door. For more information, call The Environment Council of Rhode Island (401) 331-0529 or email environmentcouncil@earthlink.net.
