PROVIDENCE – The Providence Athenaeum is one of the world’s most beautiful libraries, according to Conde Nast Traveler.
The Providence Athenaeum, described by the website as a “small, but beautiful Greek Revival building,” shares space on the list with libraries ranging from the Stockholm Public Library in Sweden and the Richard J. Riordan Central Library in Los Angeles to the State Library of South Australia and Library of Alexandria in Egypt.
“While we all know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, this is one case in which evaluating something on its appearance is not only accepted, but encouraged: In addition to their incredible collections, these libraries boast noteworthy exteriors – think soaring architecture, amazing art and bountiful gardens,” Conde Nast wrote on its website.
Incorporated in 1836, the Providence Athenaeum on Benefit Street is supported by private donors.
“There’s a heavy focus on Rhode Island history and authors who hail from the Ocean State, including Providence native H.P. Lovecraft – you’ll find a new bust of the famed horror author on display,” Conde Nast wrote.
