Condo plans for former Mansfield chocolate factory halted

MANSFIELD – Plans to turn a former chocolate factory in Mansfield into condominiums have been halted after local voters Tuesday rejected an article that would have rezoned the building for residential use, reported Attleboro’s Sun Chronicle.
Joseph Mulkern of Mulkern Mechanical, who had reportedly invested more than a year in developing the vacant Lowney chocolate factory, had hoped to rehabilitate the 100-year-old, multi-story building. He is now ending his efforts after failing to receive a two-third majority vote, according to the news source.
“At this point we’re cutting our losses,” Mulkern told the Sun Chronicle, adding that his agreement with the building’s owners was “dependent on moving forward with plans to position the property for re-use.”
According to the Sun Chronicle, critics of the proposal favored reusing the property for business purposes.
The candy factory has also been known as Merckens and ADM Cocoa.
