WARWICK – Just two years after it began, Condor Airlines will no longer offer seasonal service to Frankfurt from T.F. Green Airport.
Peter Frazier, interim CEO of the R.I. Airport Corp., said Wednesday that Condor informed the airport in late summer that it would no longer offer service to Germany from the airport, citing increased competition from low-cost Germany-based carriers operating out of Logan Airport in Boston – Airberlin and Eurowings.
Frazier said the competitors at Logan touched off “fierce market wars” and Condor opted not to sustain losses and left the New England market.
“It’s understandable, but disappointing,” Frazier said.
Condor’s last flight at T.F. Green was in early September.
Condor operated flights to Frankfurt for only two summers. Frazier said the airport is staying in touch with the airline, in the hope that it may reconsider the decision.
“Hopefully we can entice them back,” Frazier said.
He said Condor had 9,190 passengers in 2015, and approximately 8,203 this past season. The airport also waived landing fees for the carrier for two years, something Frazier described as a “traditional airline incentive program.”
Meanwhile, he said two other airlines offering international service, TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, which flies year-round to Cape Verde, and SATA International (Azores Airlines), which offers seasonal service to the Azores, are doing well.
Frazier said the airport corporation will continue to look for appropriate European destinations to offer as travel options.
