Construction begins on electrical substation for I-195 redevelopment district

PROVIDENCE – Construction has begun on a new electrical substation that will provide power to the I-195 redevelopment district as well as downtown Providence.
The new facility, to be located by National Grid on its property near the South Street Landing project site, will be completed in late 2017. It will replace a substation that dates to the 1920s, according to a statement released March 22 by National Grid.
The design for the new building to house the substation is by KITE Architects of Providence.
As part of the project, National Grid will provide land for a 20-foot wide public walkway that will connect properties along the Providence River. That plan has been approved by the Providence Downtown Design Review Committee, as well as the Rhode Island Coastal Resource Management Council.
