Construction jobs up in area

Posted 12/9/11

PROVIDENCE – The Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area gained 800 construction jobs in October compared with the same period last year, the Associated General Contractors of America said this week.

The area had 21,600 construction jobs in October, up 4 percent from the 20,800 last October.

Statewide, Rhode Island lost 100 construction jobs, a 1 percent decrease, while Massachusetts gained 2,900 jobs, or 3 percent.

The Contractors Association said nationally construction jobs were down year-over-year in 146 of 337 metropolitan areas, while jobs were up in 140 metropolitan areas and flat in 51.

“Declining federal investments in infrastructure projects, including highway and transit work, are making matters worse for construction employment in many communities,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “If it wasn’t for a slight increase in private sector demand, construction employment would be down in even more communities.”
