Consumer prices in Northeast region hold steady in February

BOSTON – The Consumer Price Index in the Northeast remained largely unchanged during the 12 months ended in February, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The index registered a 1 percent increase for the Northeast region, which includes the six New England states as well as New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Nationally, the index for all items – including housing, transportation and medical care costs as well as the volatile food and energy prices and other goods – increased 1.1 percent year over year, not seasonally adjusted.

Regionally, the energy index fell 1.3 percent on a year-over-year basis in February, while the national energy index fell 2.5 percent.

The housing index in the Northeast – which includes rent or the homeowner equivalent, fuels and utilities, and household furnishings and operations – posted a 2.3 percent year-over-year increase in February, compared with a national increase of 2.5 percent.

Transportation costs fell 1.3 percent regionally and 2.2 percent nationally. The transportation index includes private transportation costs, motor fuel and gasoline.
