NEWPORT – Sail Newport announced that Cox Communications will sponsor the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover.
The international sailing event will stop in Newport May 5-17. The City by the Sea is the only North American stopover during the Volvo Ocean Race’s nine-month circumnavigation of the globe.
Cox will provide high-speed Internet services for the Race Village at Fort Adams State Park.
“In May, when tens of thousands of people from all over the world arrive for this 12-day festival, Cox will be there to support teams with Internet services,” Ross L. Nelson, vice president, Cox Business, said in a statement. “Cox Business will be running the technical operations side of the stopover, making sure teams, staff, organizers and the media get what they need with over a gigabit of Internet access to go along with these high-performance boats.”
As an official stopover partner, Cox will be the exclusive technology company to connect the massive race village, including team compounds, sponsor pavilions, media center, broadcast compound and hospitality centers, with Internet service for live coverage of the boat arrivals, in-port racing and other events.
Brad Read, director of the Newport Stopover, said, “Cox will provide a strong technology service for our massive Race Village and for coverage of the in-port racing and leg start. We have worked with Cox as a technology partner on other high-profile sailing events and they know what an international event of this magnitude needs to keep flawless Internet service running throughout the entire event.”
As a port sponsor, Cox will have exclusive designation in the technology category for branding in Newport.
The Race Village will be open to the public with free admission, entertainment and activities every day of the event. In addition, Cox will provide 24-hour technology support on site at the Race Village in Fort Adams State Park.
The Race is currently in Auckland, New Zealand, and scheduled to leave for the Itajai, Brazil stopover after Cyclone Pam clears out of the Pacific. After a 12-day stop in Brazil, the fleet will race north to Newport; it is expected to arrive in the U.S. May 7 – 9.
From Newport, the fleet then goes on a transatlantic race to Lisbon in Portugal and from Portugal to Lorient in France. The teams will make their final sprint to the finish line in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Swedish home of Volvo, in July.
Rhode Island has another connection to the race – the current third place team, Team Alvimedica, is led by Bristol’s Charlie Enright.
