PROVIDENCE – Cox Communications and the James M. Cox Foundation have announced a $125,000 challenge grant for Save The Bay, which will be used to create a public access pier in south Providence.
The grant, awarded in celebration of World Water Day on March 22, will be used to construct the 200-foot “Gateway to the Bay” at Fields Point.
According to a news release about the grant from Save The Bay, there are no locations in south Providence that offer legally available public coastal access, and the new pier would transform the area, providing increased access to Narragansett Bay.
“Save The Bay advocates for waters that are swimmable, fishable, healthy and accessible,” Save The Bay Executive Director Jonathan Stone said in a statement. “This generous challenge grant from the James M. Cox Foundation will help us do this, as well as expand and enrich our bay education and outreach to people of all ages.”

Save The Bay will receive the funds after raising matching funds of $125,000. The total project cost is $1 million, and Save the Bay is in the midst of fundraising.

“With this challenge grant, Cox seeks to inspire others in our community to support the important work of Save The Bay,” Jay Albaugh, senior vice president and region manager, Cox Communications, said. “Narragansett Bay is an environmental treasure and we must all work together to protect it for future generations.”

Save The Bay has received a Cox Charities/Cox Conserves Community Grant in each of the last six years to support after-school educational programming and also has received in-kind public service announcement production, airtime, on-demand placement and newsletter announcements.
