Cox donates $25K learning center to Boys & Girls Clubs

WARWICK – Cox Communications and the James M. Cox Foundation will donate a $25,000 STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning center to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick on Thursday.
The new Cox Technology Center is intended to help children who have no access to a computer or Internet connection at home. It represents one of seven sites the Cox Foundation will open at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country this year, and marks the sixth one in Rhode Island.
The center will feature 10 new computers and tablets with educational software allowing students to complete homework assignments, print school reports, prepare for college and conduct job searches. It also includes two cameras for use in various programs.

“Cox is dedicated to Rhode Island communities and to providing youth access to technology, learning opportunities and best practices for staying safe online,” Jay Allbaugh, senior vice president and region manager, Cox Communications, said in a statement.

Mayor Scott Avedisian is expected to attend, along with Philip Thornton, superintendent of Warwick Public Schools, Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick Youth of the Year Dashawn Howland, Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick staff, Cox Communications representatives, local officials and educators, as well as students and their families.

The event will be held at 1 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick, Norwood Clubhouse, 42 Frederick St.
Other Cox Technology Centers are located at Boys & Girls Clubs in East Providence, Newport, Pawtucket and Providence. Providence has two centers.
