COX BUSINESS’ Director of Sales and Junior Achievement Board of Directors member Ross Nelson participated in Cox Communications’ Junior Achievement Day at George J. West Elementary School in Providence. Cox’s 42 employee volunteers worked across the school’s 33 classrooms, educating kindergarten through grade 5 students on entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
PROVIDENCE – Forty-two Cox Communications employees recently volunteered to teach elementary school students about entrepreneurship and financial literacy at George J. West Elementary School.
Cox’s turnout on April 11 broke Rhode Island’s Junior Achievement’s one day volunteer event record. Junior Achievement, a nonprofit organization that offers programs designed to help students become entrepreneurial thinkers, hosted.
Cox’s employees took over 33 classrooms for the entire school day, teaching children in kindergarten through fifth grade using hands-on activities about the community and the impact businesses have on everyday life. Work readiness was also a topic.
“Turning lessons into action and helping students learn the value of contributing to their communities was key,” said Ross Nelson, a Junior Achievement board of directors member and Cox Business director of sales. “We each taught five 30-minute lessons that encouraged the third grade class to think about their future jobs, the power of money and what businesses are in their neighborhoods.”
Volunteer Robert Sisson, a Cox client support specialist, had never done anything like this before.
“This was something I would never have thought of doing,” Sisson said. “Teaching a classroom of 26 second graders took me completely out of my comfort zone. The most rewarding part of the day was when the last bell rang and students offered handshakes for spending time with them.”
Cox has invested more than $5.6 million dollars in Cox Charities grants and in-kind support since 2001 to benefit organizations supporting youth education programs throughout Cox’s Northeast Region.
