PROVIDENCE – Cox Communications Monday afternoon began experiencing service outages throughout Rhode Island as well as in other parts of the country due to cut fiber optic lines at service providers to Cox.
The outage affected telephone service in the Ocean State, including at Providence Business News, which was not able to make or receive phone calls most of the afternoon.
Cox spokesman Eric Wagner said service was restored to customers 9:30 p.m. Monday.

He released a statement:
“A widespread outage impacted residential and business customers of Cox Communications and other providers throughout the Northeast as a result of fiber cuts experienced by a national service provider. Their technicians worked to repair the issue, and services were restored to our customers around 9:30 p.m., May 9. We will continue to conduct our due diligence to ensure all aspects of our services are 100 percent operational.”
