Cranston Library to offer intro to 3D printing

Posted 9/18/13

PROVIDENCE – The Cranston Public Library announced Thursday that it will hold its first “Introduction to 3D Printing” program on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The library acquired a Makerbot Replicator 2X 3D printer earlier this year, making the Cranston Public Library the first library in Rhode Island with a 3D printer.

“We want to make this technology available to the public,” said Library Director Edward Garcia. “[Three-dimensional] printing will revolutionize how products are designed and sold. The common person with a small amount of training will now be able to design and produce everyday three dimensional objects. It’s the library’s mission to provide an opportunity for the public to learn about new technologies.”

3D printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from digital models. The technology is accessible even to those with a minimal understanding of electronics, hardware or 3D design, according to a press release from the Cranston Public Library.

On Sept. 28, the library will hold its first “Introduction to 3D Printing” program at Cranston’s Central Library at 140 Sockanosset Cross Road.

James Rutter, director of AS220 Labs, a makerspace located in Providence, will be the program instructor, and the session will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“This is only the first of a series of 3D printing programs that the library will be offering. We are working on a regular schedule of training programs in the near future,” said Garcia.

The program is free of charge, but only eight seats are available, since each attendee will have the opportunity to print a 3D design provided by the instructor.

To register for the “Introduction to 3D Printing” program, call (401) 943-9080 ext. 6.
