Cranston installs flood warning system at Oaklawn, Wilbur Avenue intersection

CRANSTON – In an effort to prevent motorists from being stranded during heavy rainstorms, a new flood detection and warning system has been installed at Oaklawn and Wilbur avenues, according to the mayor’s office.

The $29,000 system, purchased from Ocean State Signal, is solar powered and features a box with a sensor that detects when the lowest point of Wilbur Avenue is flooded, activating a system of flashing LED lights.

“This unique system is a cost-effective way to improve public safety and will help ensure people think twice before driving into floodwaters,” Mayor Allan W. Fung said in a statement. “I’m glad the city has taken this step to address a problem that has plagued the Oaklawn neighborhood and affected numerous drivers.”

The area is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rain, as the drainage system can become overwhelmed when the nearby Meshanticut Brook fills with water, causing the road to be flooded by a foot of water or more. Drivers do not realize how deep the water is, due to a dip in the road under the railroad bridge. As a result, stranded motorists face severe damage to their car and often need an emergency response, according to information from the mayor’s office.

“While this is not a permanent solution to stop all flooding in this problem area, it’s the right thing to do, right now, with limited impact on taxpayers,” Fung said. “I want to prevent people from suffering not just embarrassment and property damage, but also potential injury. Floodwaters are dangerous at any depth.”

In addition to the new system, traffic barrels will still be placed around floodwaters to warn drivers, according to the mayor’s office.
