WYOMISSING, Pa. – Customers Bank announced Monday a new program granting a one-month deferral on consumer loans for workers affected by the government shutdown, as well as a one-month forbearance on mortgage payments.

The Employees Furlough Assistance Plan was created to aid federal workers and their families “who may need financial help through no fault of their own,” according to Customers Bank President and Chief Operating Officer Richard Ehst.

“The current situation is creating undue and undeserved pressure for thousands of workers across the nation and right here in our area,” said Ehst in a prepared statement. “In this difficult and uncertain time, Customers Bank wants our customers to know that we stand behind them.”

Although based in Wyomissing, Pa., Customers Bank moved into the Rhode Island market with the March 29 acquisition of the regional business of Flagstar Bank. Its New England regional commercial lending operations are headquartered in Providence, with a second regional office in Boston.

Bank spokesman Thomas Derr confirmed that the Employees Furlough Assistance Plan will extend to all Customers Bank customers who have consumer loans with the bank, including in Rhode Island.

Customers affected by the shutdown may call the toll-free number (855) 332-6883 for assistance or email Customers Bank at furloughassistance@customersbank.com.
