PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island had the fourth-highest multiple job holder rate in New England in 2014, according to the state Department of Labor and Training.
Rhode Island’s multiple job holder rate of 6.4 percent trailed Vermont at 8.5 percent; Maine at 8 percent; and New Hampshire, 6.8 percent.
All six New England states reported multiple job holder rates above the national average of 4.9 percent, the DLT said.
Connecticut’s rate was 5.9 percent, and Massachusetts’ rate was 5.6 percent, the DLT said.
The DLT cited the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Current Population Survey for the data.
It said that the 6.4 percent multiple job holder rate for Rhode Island, which represents residents 16 years old and older, was a 0.7 percentage point increase from the state’s 2013 rate. It tied for the sixth-largest over-the-year increase among states and represented Rhode Island’s highest level since 2010.
The DLT said that since 1994, Rhode Island has ranked among the top half of states with the highest multiple job holder rates. In 1994, the Ocean State ranked 20th in the nation, and last year, it rose to 14th. South Dakota had the highest multiple job holder rate at 8.7 percent, followed by Vermont at 8.5 percent and Nebraska, 8.4 percent, in 2014.
