PROVIDENCE – Local 1 percent hotel tax collections jumped 28.5 percent in September compared with September 2015, and rose nearly 18 percent during the first three months of the fiscal year versus the previous fiscal period.

The R.I. Department of Revenue on Monday said local 1 percent hotel tax collections climbed to $552,405 in September compared with $429,943 in September 2015, an “exceptional” increase.

For the fiscal period through September, collections increased to $1.8 million from $1.6 million during the previous fiscal period.

Little Compton led municipalities with a 68,176.8 percent increase in collections in September compared with September 2015. Pawtucket had the greatest over-the-year percentage decline at 90.6 percent.

Narragansett had the largest nominal increase over the year in September at $32,908, while Pawtucket had the largest nominal decrease at $2,506.

Over the fiscal year, Little Compton again led communities with a 14,202.1 percent increase, while Pawtucket had the largest percentage decrease at 86.4 percent.

Narragansett led the state with a $79,374 increase in collections over the fiscal year, while Pawtucket had the largest nominal decrease over the fiscal year at $7,603, the DOR said.
