THE R.I. DOT will receive $760,000 in federal funds from the Federal Highway Administration, including $400,000 to help the DOT develop a plan to attract investors to the Warwick Station Development District.
WARWICK – The R.I. Department of Transportation will receive $760,000 in federal funds from the Federal Highway Administration, Rhode Island lawmakers announced Thursday.
The DOT will receive a $400,000 Transportation, Community and System Preservation grant intended to help foster increased transportation use and private investment at the Warwick Station Development District at the crossroads of the InterLink T.F. Green Airport and Interstate 95.
The $400,000 is meant to help the DOT develop a comprehensive marketing and outreach plan to attract businesses and other stakeholders to the Warwick Station Development District.
The state will also receive an additional $360,000 Innovative Bridge Research and Deployment grant to construct a new single span buried arch bridge on Arcadia Road over Roaring Brook in Exeter.
“Smart investments in infrastructure boost business, create jobs, and connect communities,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said in a statement. “These funds will enable DOT to enhance economic development in Warwick, and take advantage of innovative technology to speed construction of a new bridge in Exeter.”
Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse along with Rep. James R. Langevin petitioned for the funds on behalf of the state. In a January letter to the Federal Highway Administration, they wrote “Rhode Island will be able to attract complementary public and private investment, increase consumer usage of transit amenities, and make the state more economically competitive in a compact Northeast market.”
