DOT tells panel Newport’s Cliff Walk not ready

NEWPORT – Visitors will not be able to walk the full length of the Cliff Walk by mid-June as previously announced by the R.I. Department of Transportation, The Newport Daily News reported last week.
According to the newspaper, access to the Cliff Walk is contingent on the completion of work near the Miramar mansion, which is about midway between Marine Avenue and Ledge Road.
The contractor will need two to four additional weeks.
The revised estimate puts a full reopening of the 3.5-mile-long National Recreation Trail, the most-visited tourist attraction in the state, at the end of June at the earliest and mid-July at the latest. The southern section of the oceanfront walkway has been closed since Superstorm Sandy destroyed sections of it on Oct. 29, 2012, the Daily News said
In September 2013, DOT awarded a $3.23 million contract to John Rocchio Corp. of Smithfield to complete the repairs. Earlier this year, the department added about $1.9 million in necessary repairs to the project, boosting the total cost to $5.13 million. •
