DOT to undertake Sakonnet study

The R.I. Department of Transportation this month announced that it is undertaking an environmental study prior to the demolition of the old Sakonnet River Bridge to determine if endangered or threatened species are living in the area.

The department will incorporate any required mitigation measures before demolishing the bridge.

The study was requested by the National Marine Fisheries Service as part of the environmental-impact statement created for the construction of the new Sakonnet River Bridge. The possible presence of several endangered and threatened species is of particular concern to NMFS.

  1. So drivers entering from neighboring Massachusetts will be treated to the old rusting hulk of a bridge as a welcome to RI tribute much the same as the old Jamestown Bridge did for years. The removal was supposed to be budgeted in the construction cost and begun as soon as the new bridge opened. In some way this rust bucket may be a punishment for defeating the tolls. Endangered species?
