Why did you select your profession?

I grew up in a family of educators so it wasn’t a huge psychic leap to begin teaching.

Where do you see yourself professionally in 10 years?

I might be running a surfing-and-photography camp in Costa Rica. Ten years is a long way off.

What advice would you give your 22-year-old self?

Stop acting like an idiot. Stop being selfish.

What is your favorite escape or hobby?

Surfing, the ocean and playing with my two daughters.

How do you keep a work-life balance?

First, I have a supportive life partner, my wife, Stephanie Alvarez Ewens, and we have a communicative and respectful relationship. I wouldn’t get any of these things done without her. Second, I love to play and learn about new things. •
