PROVIDENCE – Data Medics LLC, a data-recovery company specializing in hard drive recovery, has relocated 908 Reservoir Ave. in Cranston.

Owner Jared Palmer founded Data Medics in Meriden, Conn., in 2011, having spent much of his teenage years tinkering with, dismantling and rebuilding computers as a hobby.

After completing high school, Palmer found work with Electranet Inc., which offers electrical and IT/network services to high tech companies in Connecticut.

In 2006, Palmer’s father-in-law suffered massive data loss on the primary bookkeeping computer for his multi-million dollar construction company. He had no backup of the data. For the next several weeks, Jared put his skills to work trying to learn everything he could about how hard drives worked in order to save the family business.

After two weeks of late nights – and a small investment in recovery software, training and tools –the recovery was a success. The experience inspired Palmer to take on side jobs in data recovery, and later to open Data Medics.

In January 2012, Palmer and his wife Elicia, relocated to Providence. Elicia now works as the office manager for Data Medics, allowing Jared to commit himself fully to data recovery work –a tedious process that requires understanding of the inner workings of a hard drive, and which must often be done in a clean room.

The type of clean room used at Data Medics, an ISO 3 bench-top clean room, is essentially a type of hood that gives access to the technician’s gloved hands and uses positive pressure and high efficiency particulate filters to clean even microscopic dust particles from the air.

The importance of an adequate clean room is one reason Palmer always advises that victims of data loss go straight to the experts.

“Don’t go to a general computer repair shop to recover important data,” said Palmer. “Go straight to a professional. Having someone attempt recovery who doesn’t specialize in data recovery often leads to further data loss.”

Data Medics offers flat-rate prices for its services, ranging from $75 for recovery of USB thumb drive software data to $1,500 for recovery of a broken storage array.
