PROVIDENCE – Day One plans to increase response to and community education about child sex trafficking using a $72,030 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation.
The grant will enable the nonprofit to address the commercial exploitation of children and expand services, said Peg Langhammer, executive director for Day One. Last year, Day One launched its Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children intervention task force with the help of a $50,000 foundation grant.
“The Rhode Island Foundation continues to be a champion for child victims of sex trafficking in our state,” said Langhammer. “This most recent funding will not only help us provide statewide education to critical audiences, it will also connect CSEC victims with survivor mentors who can help them as they begin to rebuild their lives.”
Since launching the program last year, Day One has been able to connect about 50 victims with counseling and services.
The new foundation grant will allow Day One to increase response capacity and implement programs that empower victims and ensure their access to resources and services.
“Trafficking has horrible consequences for the health, well-being and future of its victims,” said Neil Steinberg, foundation president and CEO. “Responding to exploitation will produce a lifetime of benefits to the children, their families and society as a whole.”
