PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition has set Friday, Nov. 22, as the deadline for applications to compete in the eighth annual Rhode Island Elevator Pitch Contest.

Aspiring and experienced entrepreneurs who apply will present their business ideas to a panel of judges in just 90 seconds – short enough to fit in an elevator ride – to vie for $1,000 in cash prizes.

“Making a convincing case to potential investors and business partners is a critical skill for successful entrepreneurs, and the Elevator Pitch Contest provides a great opportunity to get immediate feedback from people who know how to build a business,” said Margaret “Peggy” Farrell, co-chair of the Business Plan Competition and partner in the law firm of Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP.

The free event, which is open to the public, will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Betaspring in Providence on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Entrepreneurs will present a 90-second pitch to judges and receive immediate feedback about the “clarity and persuasiveness” of the presentation. Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be awarded to the best presenters at the end of the event.

This year’s judges include Simon Campion, general manager of Davol Inc.; Scott DePasquale, executive chairman of Utilidata; John Gray, vice president of Biomedical Structures; Ann-Marie Harrington, president of Embolden; Cynthia Reed, president and CEO of LTR Holdings LLC; Soren Ryherd, founder of Working Planet; and Thorne Sparkman, managing director of the Slater Technology Fund.

Anyone interested in participating must register at www.ri-bizplan.com before the 5 p.m. deadline on Friday, Nov. 22. People who want to attend the event but not participate may pre-register on the same site until Dec. 4.

Lead sponsors of this year’s competition are Cumulus Media Providence; Davol Inc.; Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP; Embolden; Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP; Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. Ltd.; and the Providence Journal Charitable Foundation.
