PROVIDENCE – Deadlines are approaching for nonprofits to apply for $1.6 million in grants for medical research and community health from the Rhode Island Foundation.

“Because of the generosity of our inspiring donors, we are able to invest in advancing medical breakthroughs,” Neil D. Steinberg, the foundation’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “The grants we make will have the potential to enable people to lead healthier lives and jump-start one of the state’s most promising sectors.”

Oct. 11 is the deadline for nonprofit organizations involved in work that impacts health care or the health of Rhode Islanders to apply for more than $1.1 million through the foundation’s new Special Medical Funds program. Grants are expected to range from $10,000 to $75,000.

The fund targets five broad areas: renal disease and diabetes; Alzheimer’s disease and dementia; mental health and developmental disabilities; blindness and physical disabilities; and end-of-life-care, hospice care and incurable diseases.
