PROVIDENCE – This month, the Providence Geeks will host Modibot, a line of 3D-printed, customizable figurines created by toy designer Wayne Losey.
Losey orders the figurine’s chassis base in bulk from a manufacturer in China, but custom accessory pieces – which include ninja swords, Spartan helmets and dinosaur claws – are made-to-order add-ons that Losey prints from his personal studio after customers place an order through Shapeways.com, an online 3D-printing marketplace.
Losey founded Modibot after leaving a prolific toy-making career at Hasbro Inc., where he oversaw the design of iconic action figure brands including Stars Wars, GI Joe and Spiderman. He will join the Providence Geeks on Wednesday to tell the Modibot story, discuss his company’s hybrid approach to manufacturing and retail, and talk about where Modibot is headed next.
At the December dinner, the Providence Geeks will also hold its annual “Geeks for Good” food drive, collecting non-perishable food items for donation to the Rhode Island Food Bank.
The December meetup will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at AS220 in Providence. The event is free, but attendees buy their own food and drink.
